A white woolen asana (meditation cloth) is the best seat for your meditation practice, according to the Shree Guru Gita, a primary text in Swami Nirmalananda’s lineage of teachers. Swamiji had these custom made in a small village outside of Calcutta, where they were woven at a facility that employs residents from the small village.
The facility was founded and is run by the Ramakrishna Mission, which comes from Swami Vivekananda’s work in the 19th and 20th centuries, beginning with him introducing yoga to America for the first time at the 1893 Parliament of World Religions. After he traveled and taught in America for a few years, he returned to India to create an Ashram dedicated to his teacher Ramakrishna, and created the Ramakrishna Mission which does charitable work all over India.
Swamiji was very fortunate to make the connection with this loom in order to get these asanas custom made for us. Use it for your meditation practice at home and wherever you go. When you use it at a training or retreat, you take the energy of your deep practices home with you. Wash it infrequently, in cool water and by hand. Air dry.
